MANILA, Philippines - Sharon Cuneta couldn’t help but gush over a video greeting from no less than President Rodrigo Duterte.
The Megastar took to Instagram to show her elation over the greeting from the President whom she fondly calls, “Tatay Digong.” The President thanked Sharon for remembering him and recalled that his daughter, Mayor Sara is a proud “Sharonian.” He went on to call Sharon as his “friend.”
The President’s message read, “Ma’am Sharon, thank you for remembering me. I am your good friend and my daughter Sara ay talagang ina-idolize ka hanggang ngayon and I’m happy that she has chosen the right person to be her inspiration. She has been an avid admirer. Supporter and ako rin, for the many things that you have done for me and my family. I am grateful. Maraming salamat and may you live for a thousand years.”
The 52-year-old star appreciated the warm gesture and boasted about the “precious gift.” On her Instagram account, she posted a lengthy message of appreciation. She also pointed out “All politics aside and with all due respect to my husband who so understands my “wala akong pakialam sa politika” stand, I got this precious gift of a message (taken a few evenings ago) from President Rodrigo Duterte himself.”
The singer-actress added that she and Inday Sara have been friends since 2012 and that “we never cared about each other’s politics.”
Sharon admitted that she will “treasure forever” the video message and she is thrilled, “Ang yabang ko po ngayon dahil dito!”
The Voice Philippines coach promised that someday he will sing the President his favorite song, “Ikaw.”
Lastly, the Megastar couldn’t help but call out her husband, Senator Kiko Pangilinan who is a staunch critic of the administration, a message of gratitude. She said, “Thank you Kiko for your understanding and respect for me as your very apolitical/unpolitical wife.”
Inday Sara and the Megastar’s friendship
Despite Sen. Kiko Pangilinan being a critic of the Duterte administration, the President had been vocal that he always tries to blasting the senator because of Sharon. The President fondly recalls one of Sara’s childhood memory, “Pangilinan is my friend at may utang na loob ako sa kanya. Si Inday (Sara), when she was Grade 6, Grade 5, sabi ko: ‘Anak, anong gusto mong birthday gift?’ Sabi niya ‘gusto ko magkasama kami ni Sharon Cuneta.”
He then asked Pangilinan and a meeting was arranged.
Last year, Inday Sara blasted Pangilinan for joining the “Tindig Pilipinas,” a group of Liberal Party politicians criticizing the Duterte administration. The Davao City Mayor called Pangilinan and two other senators as “opportunists.” But the fierce Presidential daughter mellowed down when asked about Sen. Kiko’s wife.
She said, “I have high respect for Ate Sharon, she has been very kind to me since I was a child.”
Sara also pointed out the Sharon does not meddle into politics,“She has always been apolitical despite growing up with a politician father.”
The Megastar for her part has nothing but good words for her friend, “We never let politics get in the way of our friendship.” Mayor Sara would always remind her “to avoid stress and not get affected by politics.”
