In a study carried out by researchers at the Florida State University, the role of attractiveness in overall happiness was investigated by reviewing relationships of 223 newlyweds, aged 20 to 29. In order to do this, the couples were asked to answer several questions about getting fit and dieting. Afterwards, they were photographed and instructed to rank each other’s desirability based on face and body attractiveness.
Results showed that women with good-looking husbands tend to obsess with losing weight in order to improve their appearance. Such behavior makes them insecure, sad, and less happy. They even had feelings like “I feel extremely guilty after eating”, “I like my stomach to be empty”, and “I’m terrified of gaining weight, based on their answers on the questionnaire.
Meanwhile, wives with less attractive husbands didn’t feel the need to get fit and diet making them happier in the relationship.
Interestingly, the study also found that men’s dieting motivations weren’t based on their partner’s attractiveness.
