'Bagyong Jolina' PAGASA weather update August 24, 2017

MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATED) The Low Pressure Area (LPA) estimated over East Northeast of Virac, Catanduanes has developed into a tropical depression and was named "Jolina", state weather bureau PAGASA announced on Thursday, August 24, 2017.

UPDATE: At 11:00 p.m. today, weather central said "Bagyong Jolina" has slightly intensified as it continues to move west northwest direction.

At 10:00 pm., the center of Tropical Depression "Jolina" was estimated based on all available data at 430 km East Southeast of Casiguran, Aurora (15.4°N, 126.0°E).

"Jolina" has maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 66 kph. It is forecast to move West Northwest at 17 kph.

  • 48 Hour (Saturday evening): 310 km West Northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (OUTSIDE PAR) (19.3°N, 117.9°E)
  • 72 Hour (Sunday evening): 1,090 km West of Basco, Batanes (OUTSIDE PAR) (22.0°N, 111.6°E)
  • 96 Hour(Monday evening): 1,515 km West of Basco, Batanes (OUTSIDE PAR) (22.3°N, 107.5°E)

Tropical cyclone warning signal No. 1 (30-60kph expected in 36 hrs) was raised in nine areas: Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and Northern Aurora.

Impacts of the wind:

  • Very light or no damage to high risk structures,
  • Light damage to medium to low risk structures
  • Slight damage to some houses of very light materials or makeshift structures in exposed communities. Some banana plants are tilted, a few downed and leaves are generally damaged
  • Twigs of small trees may be broken.
  • Rice crops, however, may suffer significant damage when it is in its flowering stage.


Wave Height: (Open Sea) 1.25-4.0 meters

The estimated rainfall amount is from moderate to heavy within the 300 km diameter of the Tropical Depression.

"Jolina" is expected to further intensify before making landfall over Northern Luzon between Friday evening and Saturday early morning.

PAGASA advised of possible raising of Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) No. 1 over the Ilocos provinces, La Union, Abra and Benguet tomorrow early morning.

Meanwhile, moderate to occasionally heavy rains is expected over the Bicol region tonight and over most parts of Luzon beginning tomorrow. Residents in these areas are advised to be alert against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the eastern seaboards of Luzon due to the approaching Tropical Depression.
