MANILA, Philippines - As one of their New Year’s resolutions, many Pinoys started doing the 52-week money challenge in order to save money. These money challenges, which have gone viral on several blogs and social media sites in the Philippines, work by saving in peso increments weekly. Its goal is to keep you motivated to keep on saving.
Netizen Yona Abella decided to put her own spin on the money challenge and was able to save over P40,000 in just five months. Here’s how she did it:
According to Yona, she decided to discipline herself in order to save 846 pieces of P50 bills. She did this by prioritizing her needs and not her wants.
She then took the P50-money saving challenge by keeping all the P50 bills she could get hold off and considering it invisible. This meant disciplining herself not to spend the P50 bills she has.
Yona’s unique money saving challenge has earned praises from netizens getting over 76,000 reactions and more than 27,000 shares.

“Hindi natin dapat unahin ang mga wants natin, dahil ang WANTS makakapaghintay pero ang NEEDS hindi. Aminado ako before magastos akong tao pero hindi naman kasi tayo pa bata, pa tanda po tayo kaya sana isipin natin lahat ng pag gagastusan natin dahil hindi natin alam may mga responsibilidad tayo sa buhay na dapat pag laanan ng savings. Need natin mag save habang bata pa tayo para pag dumating ang near future hindi tayo sobrang mamomoblema when it comes sa money kasi alam mong nakapag save ka.”
She then took the P50-money saving challenge by keeping all the P50 bills she could get hold off and considering it invisible. This meant disciplining herself not to spend the P50 bills she has.
“5mos ko po na save tong 846 pcs ng 50's ganito ang aking ginawa, LAHAT NG 50 pesos na mahahawakan ko ay invisible MUNA sakin it means di ko siya gagastusin for example nag bayad ka ng buong 500 pesos then ang sinukli sayo 4 na 50's , yung 4pcs na 50's dapat invisible sakin hindi ko siya pwedeng gastusin. kailangan yung remaining na sinukli na hindi 50's yung lang gagastusin at pagkakasyahin ko, ” Yona explained.
