It has been a while since Selena Gomez added something new to her solo musical portfolio. Which is why when the young singer dropped the audio for her upcoming single, “Bad Liar,” “Selenators” as her fans would call them have quickly descended to her official YouTube account to give the new song a listen.
Gomez’s songs are not complicated and that is a good thing especially for a pop star like her. While she has successfully transitioned herself from a Disney kid star to a cutesy teeny bopper and now a full force in Hollywood, she keeps her music fairly easy to understand, straightforward and relatable. “Bad Liar” is no different. It talks about the fuzzy feeling of being in love and eventually getting serious in a relationship. Rumor has it that the song is specifically written about her current beau, The Weeknd although it is unlikely that any confirmation or denial regarding the claim will be said.
The song will not also be a Gomez track without a catchy repetitive part somewhere in its lyrics much like her previous songs like “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” “I Love You Like A Love Song” and “Kill ‘Em With Kindness.”
With the music video has yet to debut for “Bad Liar,” it is striking to see the accompanied still of Gomez seemingly wearing hospital bandages and gazing vulnerably at the camera while the song plays out. It is possible that the photo and the lyrics are not supposed to feed off of each other, instead, the snap can be a reference to Gomez’s public and self-initiated rehab stint.
Before the full version of the song audio was released, the 24-year-old has shared some snippets of the song with her 120.5 million Instagram followers. “Bad Liar” is a song written by Gomez herself alongside Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter who were also her collaborators for five songs for her 2015 album, “Revival.”
