How do most Filipino families spend the remittance money they receive from their loved ones tirelessly working abroad?
A husband of an overseas Filipina worker in Kuwait has recently gained online fame after a video of him holding the remittance money his wife sent him circulated online. The video has earned at least 1.4 million views, over 37,000 reactions and more than 28,000 shares on Facebook.
In the viral video, Reynaldo Pepito, a tricycle driver and a vendor, showed the first money remittance he received from his wife. Although the money he received would make their family live more comfortably, Pepito admitted that he is unhappy as he doesn’t get to be with his wife.
However, Pepito also admitted that their family needs to sacrifice in order to make ends meet. He assured his wife that the money remitted will be put in her and their kids’ bank accounts.
OFW’s send their hard-earned money to the Philippines to make the lives of their family more comfortable in exchange for the sacrifices they make in far-away lands. They often get to enjoy the fruits of their labor when they watch their kids graduate from college, finally live in their dream house or witness how their family members run a profitable business.
Sadly, not all OFWs get to live this kind of life even after years of hard work as some family members simply waste the money they remit on vices.

“Sapagkat ang mahal mo sa buhay, pag nasa malayong lugar, di matutumbasan ng pera iyan. Masarap pag makasama mo,” Pepito said.

“Abangan niyo po, dalawang taon. Kung paano ko gagamitin ang perang pinadala ni Misis. Mamang, maraming salamat. Maabutan mo ito, ang pera mo pag-uwi mo dito sa Pinas,” Pepito said.
