MANILA, Philippines - Following her resignation as housing secretary from President Rodrigo Duterte’s Cabinet, Vice President Leni Robredo announced on Monday, December 5 that she is prepared to be a political opposition leader.
According to Robredo, her resignation would allow her to speak her mind and protect the dreams and future of Filipinos. The female leader said she would oppose policies detrimental to the Filipino people and support policies that “right and just.”
On Sunday, December 4, Robredo quit as housing secretary after she was instructed by Duterte to “desist” from attending Cabinet meetings.
Robredo emphasized that her being critical does not mean she will not support the government and its programs.
“Parati pa rin akong kokontra sa mga bagay na hindi ko pinapaniwalaan. If being an opposition leader entails that, then magiging opposition leader ako,” Robredo said.
Defending VP post
In her televised news conference, Robredo said she would defend her position as the Vice President of the nation but would be vigilant against the re-imposition of a dictatorship.
“Buong tapang tayong magmamatyag at magbabantay nang hindi na maibalik pa ang anumang diktadurya na siyang kumitil sa libo-libong buhay noong rehimeng Marcos,” Robredo said.
Despite being part of Duterte’s cabinet, Robredo was vocal in criticizing the administration for allowing the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Marcos’ namesake and only son Bongbong lost to Robredo during the previous vice presidential election.
“We have fought this battle before and won. We will never let anyone revise our history and twist it to turn evil into good,” Robredo added.
Aside from the burial of Marcos, Robredo also criticized the government for the alleged extra-judicial killings of suspected drug personalities.
Despite her issues with the Duterte administration, Robredo said she believes the success of government will be the success of the Filipinos.
