MANILA, Philippines - After creating several premium malls which are among the largest in the world, Philippine company SM Prime aims to build the largest mall in the world by 2018.
With a whopping budget of $483 million for the development, SM Prime plans to create the giant mall in Tianjin, China. The mall, which is 28 minutes away from Beijing by train and 90 minutes by car, will feature attractions such as an Ice Skating Rink, a Science Discovery Center, game center, aquarium, a gym and a 5-star cinema with an aim to make an “entertainment and relaxation paradise.”
"We call it the project of our lives, for SM China,” said Ronald Allan Brosas, AVP of SM China Operations.
Shoppers would need more than a day to stroll the entire mall as SM Tianjin will cover 540,000 square meters of land.
The company has previously established 6 malls in China specifically located in Jinjiang, Xiamen, Suzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing and Zibo. SM Prime recently transformed SM Xiamen into its first solar-powered mall and has put an efficient ice-based cooling system in its mall in Jinjiang for environmental sustainability and energy conservation.
Filipinos are known for their penchant for shopping malls. Families, friends, couples and even single people flock to shopping malls every weekend for a dose of retail therapy, for some entertainment or to simply enjoy the cooling comfort of air conditioners. SM Prime took advantage of this and built some of the biggest shopping malls in the country that can rival other nations’ largest malls.
