Following reports that washing machine lids can dislodge violently while the laundry is spinning, Samsung Electronics announced the recall of 2.8 million washing machines which include 34 models of top-loading washers.
The South Korean company, which recently ordered the recall of 1 million Galaxy Note 7 units, admitted that the explosion can occur when bedding, water-resistant or bulky items are washed on high speed as the drum can lose its balance. As a result, it can cause excessive vibrations that pop off the lid.
“In rare cases, affected units may experience abnormal vibrations that could pose a risk of personal injury or property damage when washing bedding, bulky or water-resistant items,” Samsung earlier said in a statement.
Several customers in Georgia, Texas and Indiana claimed that they heard a violent explosion while washing their clothes. Based on court filings, a woman from Texas said that her washer “exploded with such ferocity that it penetrated the interior wall of her garage”, while a woman from Dallas, Georgia said it felt as if “a bomb went off.”
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission earlier warned owners of particular top-loading Samsung washing machines after explosion reports. Although the warning indicated machines manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016, it did not specify the model.
According to the Safety Commission, Samsung had received 733 reports of washing machines experiencing severe vibrations or the tops dislodging. They also reportedly received nine reports of related injuries including an injured shoulder and a broken jaw.
The company also announced that users could choose an in-home repair with a one-year warranty extension or a rebate which can be applied toward purchasing another Samsung washing machine. However, the company also emphasized that it would only refund customers who purchased the recalled washing machine in the last 30 days.
Customers can input their serial number in Samsung’s website to determine if their washing machines are included in the recall.
