PAGASA: 'Lawin' now a super typhoon; Signal No. 5 up in Cagayan and Isabela

MANILA, Philippines - 'Bagyong Lawin' (international name: Haima) has intensified into super typhoon and maintains its serious threat as it moves closer to Cagayan-Isabela area, state weather bureau PAGASA announced in its 2:00 p.m. update on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.

"Powerful typhoon 'Lawin' is expected to make landfall over Cagayan - Isabela Area late tonight up to tomorrow early morning (October 20) then will cross Apayao and Ilocos Norte," PAGASA added.

At 1:00 p.m. today, the eye of Super Typhoon 'Lawin' was located based on all available data at 300 km East of Casiguran, Aurora (16.5°N, 124.9°E). It has maximum sustained winds of up to 225 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 315 kph and forecast to move West Northwest at 24 kph.

PAGASA raised tropical cyclone warning signal (TCWS) No. 5 over the areas of Cagayan and Isabela.

Signal No. 4 up in Apayao, Kalinga, Ilocos Norte, Abra, Ilocos Sur, Mt. Province, Ifugao and Calayan Group of Islands.

Signal No. 3 hoisted in La Union, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and Northern Aurora.

And, Signal No. 1 for Rest of Zambales, Bulacan, Bataan, Pampanga, Rizal, Rest of Quezon, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay and Metro Manila.

In a report from ABS-CBN News Channel, Isabela Governor Faustino Dy III said the province is now closely coordinating with the local government units. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for its part said regional disaster officials have prepared for the violent typhoon.

Meanwhile, Cagayan Governor Manuel Mamba on Tuesday, met with disaster, rescue, and weather agencies to discuss preparations for the expected landfall of 'Lawin.'

The estimated rainfall amount is from moderate to heavy within the 800 km diameter of the Super Typhoon.

Sea travel is risky over the eastern seaboards Southern Luzon and the northern and eastern seaboards of Samar.
