MANILA, Philippines - Kapuso actress and comedy queen AiAi Delas Alas was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (For the Church and Pope) medal from Catholic Church head Pope Francis for her “distinguished service to the church.”
Recipients of the medal, according to Bishop Antonio Tobias, are exemplary lay persons recognized for their distinguished service. Aside from Delas Alas, renowned composer Ryan Cayabyab also received the medal considered to be the highest medal awarded to the laity by the Pope.
In her interview with GMA News, Delas Alas admitted that she was surprised to receive such award and initially doubted if she was worthy. But according to her, she will simply follow God’s plan for her despite her imperfection and weaknesses.
Delas Alas is set to formally receive the Papal Award on her birthday on November 11 at the Cathedral of Good Shepherd.
Currently, the Sunday Pinasaya star is involved in the construction of Kristong Hari Church in Commonwealth Ave., Quezon City as well as Anawim Lay Missions Foundation, Inc. in Montalban, Rizal, on top of her charity works.
According to Delas Alas, she has long searched for her purpose in life other than making Filipinos laugh. Serving the church and doing several projects became her way of contributing to the world.
“Yun 'yung talagang gusto ko noon pa—magkaroon naman ng kasaysayan ang buhay ko. Kapag humarap ako kay Lord, ano bang na-contribute ko bukod sa pagpapatawa sa buong Pilipinas? Masasabi ko na naka-contribute naman ako sa iba Niyang anak at iba pa Niyang projects,” Delas Alas revealed.
Delas Alas also considers the award as a challenge for her to serve as a good example to other Catholics.
The Marian devotee also admitted forgiving the people who had hurt her and asking forgiveness to the people she had hurt in the past. The Catholic Church, according to Delas Alas, has forgiven an imperfect person like her.
"Marami rin akong igi-give up. Celibate ako until ikasal kami ni Gerald. Desisyon ko ito para sa sarili ko, para naman maging karapatdapat ako sa mata ng Panginoon,” Delas Alas added.
