“Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” is internet's newest craze!

The Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen music video was initially posted last August 25 on Youtube and has now more than 6,000,000 views as of press time.

But this earworm-style music video made its viral debut in comedy Facebook page “9gag” which netizens around the world immediately grooved in with its weird yet wholly fun tune.

PPAP as seen in the video is performed by animal print clad, 40-year old DJ Piko-Taro, a fictional persona played by entertainer Kazuhiko Kosaka.

Its success can also be credited back to its easy to memorize lyrics and fun hand gestures.

The song is sang like this:
"I have a pen. I have an apple. Apple-pen!
I have a pen. I have [a] pineapple. Pineapple-pen!
Apple-pen. Pineapple-pen. Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen."

According to an article by BBC News, the internet craze has all the ingredients for its viral status:

“It has all the ingredients for a viral video formula: an addictive beat, silly lyrics and a hilariously simple dance routine to back it up.”

On answering a tweet by a fan DJ Piko-Taro answers how he come up with the song’s bizarre yet addictive fun tune, saying that he was “singing all too soon” as he was making the music for the viral song.

PPAP’s craze resulted also to hundreds of tributes and covers recreating the moves or even just ‘dubbing’ to the song. Viral now are the video of Japanese twins Riko and Rika lip-syncing to PPAP.

Also, as expected Filipino netizens picked up PPAP’s bizarre yet addictive tune and created a called “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” challenge mimicking the viral video or creatively parodying it.

Here are some viral PPAP Challenge videos:

Internet sensation Louis Pre Jr. whom went viral over dancing to local news TV shows opening intro joined the PPAP challenge:

Even the AlDub, Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza grooved to viral song’s addictive beat!

Comedic trio JoWaPao certainly wouldn’t miss the fun on doing the PPAP!

Though PPAP is trending wildly on the internet, it has not particularly trended on Japanese social media.

The viral Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen is predicted to dominate over music charts very soon.
