DAVAO CITY, Philippines - Presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has lost two of her unborn triplets, three days after the fatal explosion in the city. An emotional Duterte made the announcement on Thursday, September 8 at the turn-over ceremonies of Task Force Davao.
According to the 38-year-old mayor, she learned of her babies’ conditions after the flag raising ceremony on Monday, September 5. The two unborn babies, who happened to be identical twins, no longer have heartbeats, according to her doctors. The baby left with a heartbeat is still fighting for life and had been doing well since Monday.
"I lost my identical twins. Monday, I wasn't feeling well, so nagpunta ako sa doctor and said I'm not feeling very good. So she checked and told me na-arrest na raw ang heartbeats ng identical twins, but fighting pa ang isa," Duterte said.
Last August 19, Duterte announced her multiple pregnancy to the public through a statement amidst the Kadayawan Festival, a local celebration. Duterte said her sensitive pregnancy made her lie low from her duties in the previous weeks. However, Duterte reassured the public that she will still function as a mayor, unless her doctors advise her to stop.
A few days following her announcement, Duterte had a Twitter altercation with Dr. Raquel Fortun, a forensic pathologist who said it was too early to celebrate over a seven-week multiple pregnancy.
"Too early to rejoice over 7weeker lalo na triplets. Wait for delivery and spare oneself from heartache. PR for Lolo?” Fortun wrote on Twitter.
In response, Duterte said she was merely explaining her absence in important events and advised Fortun to mind her own business.
Duterte is married to Atty. Manases Carpio, with whom she has two kids, Sharky, 7, and Stingray, 3.
