MANILA, Philippines - Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is running for president in the May 2016 elections, his political adviser said on Saturday, October 10, 2015.
Adviser Lito Banayo told GMA News the confirmation if Duterte will run for president in the next poll.
"Yes." Banayo said adding that the mayor will make formal announcement soon.
Duterte on Friday night told the media that he would wait for October 15 before declaring.
#Duterte2016 topped Twitter Philippines trends list Saturday evening with netizens pushing for the mayor's official announcement of running for the presidential race.
The filing of certificates of candidacy (CoC) would run from October 12 to October 16, Monday to Friday next week.
As per the current survey of Pulse Asia and Social Weather Stations (SWS), Duterte placed 4th with 16% of the voters said they will vote him for president if the elections were held at the time the surveys were conducted.
It's not yet clear whether Senator Alan Peter Cayetano or Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr will be Duterte's tandem in the 2016 elections.
PDP-Laban president, Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III said the party wants Cayetano as Duterte's running mate.
On Monday, Marcos announced that he flew to Davao City last September 30 to consult with Duterte regarding his plans. "He was gracious enough to promise me his support should I decide to run for Vice President. I too will support Mayor Duterte if and when he runs for President," Marcos said.
