MANILA, Philippines - The country celebrates 'Buwan ng Wika' or 'Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa' (National Language Month) this August 2015 as an annual celebration highlighting our Filipino language.

The Department of Education (DepEd) and Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) lead this year's celebration with the theme “Filipino: Wika ng Pambansang Kaunlaran” (Filipino: Language of National Development). The celebration highlights linguistic and cultural activities all over the country.

On Monday, August 3, the month-long celebration will kick-off in Taguig City through flag-raising activity.

Also set in the first week is the celebration of the historic National Congress of Language Planning to be held at Sison Auditorium, Lingayen, Pangasinan from August 5-7.

On August 17, there will be an essay writing contest to be held in Western Mindanao State University.

The conclusion of 'Buwan ng Wika' celebration will be done at the Ateneo de Manila University on August 29 through "Congress of Writers " to be administered by Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL).

'Buwan ng Wika 2015' is pursuant to Proclamation 1041, signed by former President Fidel V. Ramos, which declares the annual national celebration of the National Language Month every August. Additionally, former President Manuel Quezon, considered the Father of the National Language, was born on August 19, 1878.

In line with this, DepEd has released memo no. 79, series of 2015 to provide guidelines, objectives and sub-themes of 'Buwan ng Wika' celebration.

The objective of the celebration are the following:
  • Fully-implement Presidential Proclamation No. 1041
  • Encourage all government agencies and private sectors to be part of programs that raise language and civic consciousness
  • Show the importance of language which is better than the national development

The theme for the month is divided into four sub-themes which will serve as a guide in the weekly activities during the month of August:

a. Filipino: Wika ng Kaunlarang Pangkultura;
b. Filipino: Wika ng Kaunlarang Pang-ekonomiya;
c. Filipino: Wika ng Kaunlarang Panlipunan; at
d. Filipino: Wika ng Kaunlarang Panteknolohiya.
