Gilas Pilipinas adjustments to win games versus Puerto Rico, Senegal

After almost defeating Croatia and world #3 Argentina and putting up a solid game against a stronger Greece squad, Gilas Pilipinas are proving they can go head-to-head against the world’s best teams.

Nevertheless, there are a number of adjustments that Coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes needs to implement if Gilas Pilipinas wants to win its last two games in the group stage against Puerto Rico and Senegal.

LIVE BY THE THREE, DIE BY THE THREE

Gilas Pilipinas has been attempting quite a number of three point shots in the games they’ve played so far. While they have made a lot of these shots, they also missed a lot. Simply put, Gilas Pilipinas lives by the three and dies by the three.

It’s a given that players like Jeff Chan, Jimmy Alapag, Ranidel de Ocampo, and Jayson Castro William can light up the boards from beyond the arc. However, they need to have a better spacing and avoid shooting threes in a hurry. There have been times that Jimmy Alapag and Jayson Castro William have hurriedly attempted to shoot the three in transition. It would pay off better for them to have a better ball movement and find the open man.

TAKE CARE OF THE BALL, TURNOVERS ARE KILLING GILAS PILIPINAS

Turnovers have been crucial in Gilas Pilipinas’ loses to Croatia and Argentina. Blatche needs to defer the ball-handling duties to the team’s point guards. Furthermore, the inbound plays are always risky for the Filipinos. No one seems to provide support to the designated ball receiver, who is usually pressured by the opposing team. This often results to turnovers and points in transition for the opposing side.

JAPETH AGUILAR NEEDS TO STEP UP

Andray Blatche has been solid in his 3 games. Marc Pingris and Junmar Fajardo have done their fair share of battling the opposing big men. But Japeth Aguilar has been a no show so far. He’s settling for midrange jumpers. He is not very aggressive in challenging shots nor in corralling rebounds off missed shots. If Gilas Pilipinas’ wants to win against Puerto Rico and Senegal, Aguilar needs to step up and be more aggressive.
