Manila, Philippines - Embattled Deniece Cornejo attempted suicide inside her detention cell at the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters on Sunday, July 13, 2014.
Cornejo slashed her wrist this morning in protest of the dismissal of a rape complaint she filed against host-actor Vhong Navarro.
In a statement sent to “The Buzz,” her legal counsel, Atty. Salvador Panelo, said that Deniece is protesting the supposed “injustice she is suffering from - and as a symbolic protest against the July 11, 2014 anomalous dismissal of the rape complaint she already formally withdrew on July 4, 2014."
"Dismissal of the rape complaint by the city prosecutor of Taguig is a grave misconduct and smacks of evident bad faith intended to further impair her credibility.", Panelo added.
Panelo also revealed that Deniece is presently in a state of depression and going through sleepless nights. She is still in shock, languishing in jail".
Cornejo is also said to be lamenting the showbiz industry’s influence and media’s power to “cast her as the heel instead of being the wronged victim.”
Deniece’s grandfather, Rod Cornejo, detailed that she carved the initials “WR,” which stands for women’s rights, on her wrist using a blade.
Deniece, according to Rod, is now in a good condition. He said that her wounds is “superficial” and it wasn’t a suicide attempt.
“The tragic saga of Deniece Cornejo continues even as the purveyors of injustice remain hostage to ignorance and progressive putrefaction,” Panelo concluded.
