Manila, Philippines - The Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire won the WBA world featherweight fight against South African Simpiwe Vetyeka via technical decision on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Cotai Arena in Macau.
Donaire was declared champion after 5th round of the match to dethrone WBA undisputed featherweight world champion Simpiwe “V12” Vetyeka. Bloodied Donaire suffered nasty gash in his left eye that led the officials to stop the fight and have decided the bout through the score cards.
The three judges scored it 49-46 for Donaire, thereby awarding the Filipino-American a unanimous technical decision.
However, Donaire who look unhappy with the result of the match with Vetyeka promised to have a rematch to put closure to the contest.
“I’m sorry that I was unable to give you guys a proper fight,” Donaire said during the post-fight interview.
The WBA featherweight crown is Donaire’s fifth world title.
Meanwhile, Vetyeka denied the cut was caused by a head butt, but admitted he made some mistakes that caused his loss.
“I don’t think it was a headbutt,” he said through a translator. “But I fought careless.”
