Manila, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) announced via Twitter that classes in public and private schools from elementary to high school has been suspended tomorrow, Monday, July 22, 2013 due to anticipated build-up of traffic in QC roads when President Aquino delivers his fourth State of the Nation's Address (SONA).
The announcement of class suspension on SONA day is expected as it draws heavy traffic due to arrival of guests, media coverage and militant groups stage rallies in major portion of Commonwealth Avenue.
QC Mayor Herbert Bautista said classes will be suspended as a safety measure for the students.
However, the decision to suspend classes in universities and college level, meanwhile, is up to the discretion of the schools and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
During his past SONA, the local government and DepEd also declared class suspension in elementary and high schools near the Batasang Pambansa Complex.
The State of the Nation Address is an annual event mandated by the 1987 Constitution, which also marks the opening of the 16th Congress.
