The automated booking system will hopefully help ease tourists before they book their hotels and flights to the city. It can also be accessed by travel agencies all over the country and even abroad.

Last February 7, 2013, the DOT turned over the system to the City Government of Puerto Princesa for the site’s operation and management as provided by the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn, in his acceptance message, shared how tourism has anchored the city’s sustainable development paradigm, particularly in managing the ecosystems that tourism in-flows demand.

“We worked very hard for Puerto Princesa’s tourism. And we could not be happier that it, indeed, worked and flourished. But the demand was quite overwhelming. It eventually caused us more problems than rewards. We had more than what we can handle, and we weren’t prepared for it,” Mayor Hagedorn added. He looks forward to a renewed fun in Puerto Princesa especially now that an online booking system and more efficient payment modes are in place. He expressed his assurance to the public assured that this program will continue beyond his term of office.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River (or Underground River) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The 8.2-kilometer river, said to be the longest navigable underground river in the world, winds its way underneath a mountain range, through the St. Paul Underground River Cave, and then goes out into the South China Sea. The journey through the cave system alone is 24 kilometers long.

It is reported that from 2011, there is an increase of 45 percent total visitors on PPUR.

The tourism agency turned over the online booking system—which can be accessed through http://ppur.com.ph/ even by travel agencies all over the country and even abroad—to the city government on Feb. 7.

Successful bookings will receive an e-mail notification, which will serve as a digital invoice that has to be printed and presented upon the visit to the PPUR.

According to the official website of Palawan for PPUR, implementation of the online booking system for the Puerto Princesa Underground River has been delayed due to procedural requirements and technical adjustments.

Originally, bookings and other information for the Tour can be made at the Underground River Booking Office located at City Coliseum, National Highway, Bgy. San Pedro, Puerto Princesa City with the following contact details: Tel. Nos. (48) 434-2509/ (48) 7230904 Email: undergroundriver_ppsrnp@yahoo.com. Bookings are confirmed on a first come, first serve basis.
