The Feast of Black Nazarene on January 9, 2013 commemorates the 'Traslación' or Passage of life-sized, dark wooden statue of Jesus Christ through procession or transfer of the image to its present shrine in Quiapo church. Highlight of the celebration is the grand procession from Quirino Grandstand at seven in the morning. Photos and video are available here.
According to NCRPO, 11 million devotees of the Black Nazarene are expected to flock the procession. NCRPO said that more than 3,000 police officers will be deployed for security. MMDA is also expected to provide around 1,000 personnel to assist in the orderliness.
Prior to the activity, advisories and announcements were dessiminated for the safety and guide of all devotees, citizens directly involved in the festivity and students in the vicinity of procession.
Private schools also announced their suspension of classes: Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Adamson University, University of the East (Manila), Mapua Institute of Technology, Far Eastern University, University of Sto.Tomas and San Beda College.
DepEd said that classes will resume the following day. However, for Mapua, January 9 is still a regular working day as posted on its Facebook page.
