President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III on Friday appoints Maria Lourdes Sereno, Supreme Court Associate Justice as the new chief justice. Sereno, 52 is also the first female CJ in the Philippine history.
Sereno is the 24th CJ of the Philippines. She replaced dismissed Chief Justice Renato Corona, who was removed from his post on May 29 for failing to disclose P183 million in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.
Sereno bested other five SC "insiders" who were on the JBC shortlist submitted to Aquino such as acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio (7 votes) as well as Associate Justices Roberto Abad (6 votes), Arturo Brion (6 votes), and Teresita Leonardo-De Castro (5 votes).
Sereno, second youngest to be appointed as Chief Justice and will have 18 years before reaching the mandatory retirement age. This means she will potentially have the longest term in recent Supreme Court history. She will also be serving alongside four Presidents: Aquino and the winners of the 2016, 2022, and 2028 national elections.
The appointment of Sereno creates buzz Friday night and got Twitter trends "Sereno" and hashtag #CJPaSiSereno. Netizens talk about reforms that Sereno can do for the judiciary in the country.
In RP history there were 6 CJs from UST, 14 from UP (including Sereno), 1 from Escuela de Deretso, 2 from Ateneo, 1 from FEU, 1 from Northwestern, tweeted by Paolo Bediones.

Competence, integrity & independence are the trademarks that newly appointed CJ#Sereno will bring to the judiciary. Expect genuine reforms.

Im jst tired of justices, lawyers acting like status quo is ok. Cases take too long. System needs rethinking. Hope CJ Sereno enables change.

“@teddyboylocsin: If she can swing the Court her way for 18 years, PNoy will have a four term presidency so far as jurisprudence concerned.”

@timothygo_only1 Yes! By the time Sereno ends her term JPE's already 106 years old :)) Mandatory retirement age is for justices only.
