Second degree cousins Vianca Pearl I. Amores and Marianito Jesus B. Del Rio share a lot of things in common. Both took up B.S. accountancy at the University of San Carlos (USC) and graduated with flying colors. While Amores graduated summa cum laude, Del Rio graduated magna cum laude in the same graduation rites.
Then the two decided to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Licensure Examination at the same time. As fate would have it, the dynamic duo ended up sharing the top spot in the top 10, leading 3,389 CPA board passers.
Both got a rating of 92.67% and ranked first place in the May 2017 CPA licensure exam. The two are among the nine graduates of USC and University of San Jose Recolectos who made it to the top ten.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Amores revealed that they didn’t expect the turn-out of the event but were hopeful. Both believe that hard work and mutual support for each other helped them earn the top spot.
"We help each other and influence each other the positive way,” Amores said.
“I have every reason to be happy with both us sharing the top one position. We share the same wishes and goals,” she added.
Aside from Amores and Del Rio, four other graduates from the same university made it to the top 10. Among them are Jessa Bermudo, who placed second with an average of 92.50%, Alyanna Kate Buenavista and Maaku Wamar Saito, who both ranked fourth with an average of 91.83%; and Cristiemay Vertudazo, who placed tenth with an average of 90%.
Karen Mar Calam, also a graduate of USC Law School, topped the recent Bar exams, which is deemed to be the most difficult licensure exam in the country.
On May 14, 15, 21 and 22, 9,645 examinees took the CPA licensure exam in the cities of Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legaspi and Manila.
