MANILA, Philippines - (Updated as of 11:00 a.m., February 27) Classes and office work in some areas are suspended on Monday, February 27, 2017, due to nationwide transport strike or 'tigil-pasada.'
The coalition of transport groups aims to stop the government modernization plan to phase out 15-year-old and older public utility jeepneys and replace them with modern and environment-friendly vehicles.
Malacanang Palace through Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea also announced on Sunday that classes are suspended in elementary and high school levels, both private and public in the National Capital Region (NCR) tomorrow.
For the suspension of classes on tertiary level, Palace said: "Let's wait for an announcement if there'll be a suspension at 11 a.m. tomorrow."
Meanwhile, Mayor Abby Binay also announced on Twitter that classes are suspended for public schools in all levels in Makati City.
"In view of the transport strike set for tomorrow, Monday, classes are suspended for public schools in all levels. Suspension of classes for private schools is at the discretion of the school administration," Binay said.
In addition, she announced: "Number Coding is lifted ONLY for PUVs that will not be joining the strike."
Aside from Makati, affected NCR cities of the transport strike will be: Caloocan, Quezon City, Manila, Marikina, Pasig, Taguig, Parañaque, Pasay and Las Piñas.
