MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATED) Blockbuster director Wenn V. Deramas has died today, February 29 due to cardiac arrest. He was 49.
Comedian Vice Ganda confirmed the sad news via Twitter Monday morning.
Deramas' friend, June Rufino, told ABS-CBN News that the director died at the emergency room of Capitol Medical Center at around 2 a.m.
Rufino added that Deramas went there to see his sister who earlier succumbed to cardiac arrest.
"Yung kapatid niya, matagal nang maraming sakit, nagda-dialysis na nga 'yan and lahat. So, sinabi na-heart attack so sinabi ni Direk, tinawagan niya 'yung neighbor nila, sinabi takbuhin mo muna sa Capitol. Tapos sumunod siya doon, nakita niya ang pag-revive kasi dead on arrival na," Rufino told radio dzMM.
"Nakita niya 'yung pag-revive. Nung napronounce na na dead, bigla din siyang na ano, tumirik nga 'yung mata niya, tapos di na rin siya na-revive," he added.
According to ANC tweets, Deramas "almost had a heart attack two years ago" and had an angioplasty the previous year.
"We're bringing his remains to Arlington in Araneta. Other details of the funeral to be released some other time," Rufino added.
Deramas is known for known for box-office movies such as The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin, The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin, Sisterakas, Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy, and the 2015 Star Cinema Metro Manila Film Festival entry, Beauty and the Bestie which has earned the title “Highest Grossing Filipino Film of All Time.”
Deramas was a graduate of University of Santo Tomas (UST) with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management.
Meanwhile, sympathy and condolences poured on microblogging site Twitter as netizens and stars are still in shock for the loss of the Kapamilya director.
