MANILA, Philippines- Following a “horrible” mistake committed by host Steve Harvey, Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach was crowned Miss Universe 2015 on Monday, December 21 (Manila time) at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.
A moment of awkwardness enveloped the pageant venue as Harvey mistakenly named Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez as the winner of the prestigious beauty contest and Wurtzbach as the first runner-up.
Harvey, an American comedian and an Emmy award-winning TV personality quickly apologized for his mistake. The organizers of the pageant even showed the result card from Ernst and Young to the audience.

Hailed from Cagayan de Oro, Wurtzbach is the third Filipina to take home the Miss Universe title after a 42-year-long drought.
Wurtzbach and Gutiérrez , along with Miss USA Olivia Jordan, who finished 2nd runner-up in the competition, were the top 3 contestants who made it to the final.
During the final question and answer portion, the top 3 candidates were asked “Why should you be the next Miss Universe?”
Wurtzbach won the judges hearts with her impressive answer: “To be a Miss Universe is both an honor and a responsibility I will use my voice to influence the youth and I will raise awareness to certain issues and causes like HIV awareness that's timely and relevant to my country which is the PH. I want to show the world or the universe rather, that I am confidently beautiful with a heart.”
